I interviewed music producer a couple of months ago at his studio , read on to find out what we talked about .
Q. Who is this handsome-looking gentleman behind the signature name Magnom?
A. I am Joseph Bulley. I come from a family of six, two sisters, one brother, a father and mother; yeah that’s the person behind all of those hit songs.
Q. Educational background?
A. I had my basic education at Christ The King from Kindergarten to JSS and then for Senior High I went to St. Peters Secondary. And then from there I did my first degree at Legon, majoring in Psychology. I entered high school in 2003 and finished in 2005, got to the university in 2006 and finished in 2010.
Q. Most parents would want their children to be doctors, lawyers or end up in other white collar jobs; what was your parents’ response to you opting for sound engineering?
A. Initially they didn’t support me because they thought it was nothing serious, and that it was just a hobby and not something I wanted to take far. They didn’t support it but once they see you can take care of yourself, you are paying your own bills, you are not falling on them for any financial support they will be okay with it. But they still are a bit skeptical.
Q. As a music engineer it is important to have a certain love for music to be dedicated or enjoy what you do. What inspired the love for music?
A. I grew up in a home that was always filled with music . My dad loves music so I grew up listening to all sorts of music classical African jazz highlife and everything reggae so that’s where I think I developed the love for music
Q. At a point in your life you were rapping with Asem as a duo, what influenced the decision to move into sound engineering?
A. At the time, we were in high school after school. I quit rap for sometime but later came across a software and started playing with it and I found out I could do something with it. So that’s how it started and I started making money off it so the interest grew.Q. How many years has it been since you started doing sound engineering?
A. I started in early 2007, so its being six years since I started. I started playing around with it so it got serious after only like two years in 2008. So I have being doing this for about four years now.
Q. As a sound engineer, its likely lots of artistes will troop to your studio to record, have you ever had to send someone away because he or she wan’t super talented?
A. No… actually if I feel that you are not that strong as an artiste, I will help you; we will work together. That’s the whole point…
Q. What inspires you?
A. I read books, I consult with people; I watch videos a lot of videos on sound engineering. I have read a lot of books, too and listen to new music to update myself.
Q. Any new projects?
A. Im working on most of the songs on Sarkodie’s upcoming album ‘ Sarkology ‘, Asem’s album ‘ Tough Times Don’t last ‘, Asem and Samini’s joint album ‘ Close Friends ‘ singles for Lil Shaker and lots of mainstream artistes . Im also working on an album which is yet to be titled
