A novel by Ghanaian-Canadaian author, Esi Edugyan has made the best of 2018 Lists by Barack Obama, former President of the United States. The novel ‘Washington Black’ was included in Obama’s ‘Favourite Books of 2018’ list. The novel published in September 2018 follows an 11-year-old boy who escapes slavery at a Barbados sugar plantation with the help of the owner’s kinder brother. It won the $100,000 Scotiabank Giller Prize 2018 – making Edugyan the third writer to ever win the award twice. The novel was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize,  the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize,  and the 2019 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. Power couple Jay Z and Beyonce, over the weekend, attended the ‘JRRNNYS’ exhibition by Ghanaian artist Derek Fordjour. On Saturday, February 16, the couple visited the Night Gallery, Los Angeles, United States of America to view the latest works of Fordjour, once referred to as ‘The Jay Z of The Art world’ in a FORBES feature article. Ed Sheeran’s co-written album with Fuse ODG wins Grammy award

Singer Ed Sheeran’s ‘ Divide’  album won ‘ Best Pop Vocal Album ‘ at the 2018 Grammy Awards. UK-Based Ghanaian artiste, Fuse ODG is credited as a co-writer of a song on the album.  The song‘ ‘Bibia Be Ye Ye ‘ was written when Sheeran visited Ghana in 2016 to seek “ new-to-him influences ” for the album released in 2017. The 2018 Grammy Awards was held at the Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, United States of America, and was hosted by Comedian James Corden. A trailer of medical drama ‘ New Amsterdam ’ has been released by American Broadcaster, NBC and Universal TV. The series stars Ghanaian-Iranian-British actress Freema Agyeman as Dr. Hana Sharpe, the lead doctor at a Manhattan hospital who has not practiced medicine in a while. She appears on Talk shows across the country pitching the hospital. The production is inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer’s memoir  Twelve Patients: Life & Death at Bellevue Hospital. It tells the story of the new director (played by Ryan Eggold) of a hospital whose approach disrupts the status quo while always prioritizing patient care.
